The X3D Earth project is creating an open standard based infrastructure for
visualizing geospatial information. X3D (Extensible 3D graphics) is the approved standard for
web 3D graphics. It is prepared by the Web3D Consortium, reviewed and authorized
by the International Organization for Standard (ISO). We are making sure that 3D assets
are royalty free, achievable, usable, and part of web infrastructure. Now X3D Earth itself
is building globe models on top of these capabilities so that we can use different data sources
and produce multiple servers. We are looking at how can different countries and different individuals
mash up and put together their work. This would not be possible if we would not using standard,
not just our own, but the World Wide Web Consortium and the Open Geospatial Consortium.
The seminar discusses fundamentals of X3D Earth architecture and recent progresses
including the geospatial component dataset generator, the server-side code base of prototype
X3D Earth globe implementation, the X3D Earth web service, several X3D Earth globe implementation
including terrain, bathymetry, map and imagery, and the geospatial content creation framework.
