[UI] Working group Status and updates
Thanks Anita~!

I am glad you have sent this out; it provides a little fire to recap, refresh and renew!
There have been a lot of efforts underway although perhaps under the covers...

*    Web3D UI WG Update

Work in our inaugural year consisted basically of evaluating the different approaches to integrating alternate input devices into X3D scenegraphs. We looked at the literature as well as existing toolkits to find what is appropriate to standardize as a greatest common denominator for cross-platform worlds.  For a truly device-independent standard, we proposed to the X3D Spec group that interaction methods and devices be specified by the application rather than the X3D scene. Device bindings for interactions <could> be specified in a configuration file described as a Web3D C Recommended Practice (eg vrjuggler, jinx).

We proposed to generalize ImagePlane interactions (rather than MouseSensors) and in the case of higher DOF devices and immersive platforms, we introduced a NavigationCamera or Navigator  node. This node could take world coordinates (from an SAI app for example) and apply collsion detection and terrain following per the avatarSize and environment.

Similarly the picking component In Terms of our proposal for cleaning up the viewing model of X3D, we proposed changing fields between NavInfo and Viewpoint; backwards compatibility prose still needs to be written up for X3D spec group.

In the midst of this effort, we kicked off last year reaching out to the VR community at the IEEE VR conference. We organized an all-day workshop looking at the requirements and challenges for taking X3D content to immersive platforms:
http://www.web3d.org/conferences/vr2007/ . The workshop was very successful. A shortened version of this report will appear in the next issue of IEEE CG&A column called Projects in VR. A shorter follow up workshop is planned for this year and we will address impediments to the requirements identified last year.

Dynamic discovery of bound nodes as a Browser service has hit a roadblock in the X3D Spec group.
While a number of tools have demonstrated this functionality none are open souorce, which could illuminate the exact problem and move us closer to consensus.

*  Web3D UI WG plans for 2008

Our main goals for this year include becoming more effective in demonstrating concepts. Implementation cycles are a current limitation as we are hard-pressed to keep pace with specification activities and standardization requirements. We need more volunteers to help prototype and code our proposals!

    Visualization
We need to weigh in and pursue the proposed Annotation component; also evaluate Layer and Layout for suitability.

    Devices
We still need to acheive consensus on how to specify / re specify multiple devices for Navigation, Selection, Manipulation in the context of a platform independent standard.

    Interaction
We need to provide some better review of Picking Sensor component

We need to provide a recommendation for Web3D conformance efforts regarding the interpretation of various navigation types (eg EXAMINE)

I look forward to a great year and hopefully a renewed initiative for our work

    including regular conference calls!

All comments welcome and more to come!

best regards,

Dear Working Group Members,

As the Web3D consortium grows to define and evolve X3D standards through the efforts of our working groups, we are looking for updates from the chair person(s) of each of these working groups on their goals and plans for 2008. This information will help us plan for the future and share our progress between the working groups. I would appreciate if you can send me the following information at your earliest.

Your goals for 2008.

Your plans for activities, meetings, etc.

Plans for spec additions.

Issues or concerns.

Plans on working/coordinating with other X3D working groups.

Plans to work with partner-organizations or liaisons.

Any additional support needed from the Web3D organization.

I am sending this email to all working groups and I am aware some are currently inactive.

Working groups:

X3D, X3D Earth, CAD, Medical, X3D Networking, User Interface, VizSim, X3D Conformance, X3D Shaders, GeoSpatial, DIS-XML, H-Anim and X3D Source.

Thanks!

Anita
